Remote control of locks

WagnerT/MilbradtT S2S2  In the past: lock control on site  Now: Lock control via remote control  Usually four locks (chambers) can be controlled by one control center  Up to seven videocameras transfer the pictures  All locks need a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)  The longest distance between lock and control center is currently up to 100 km  At daytime 1 person controls 2 chambers  At night 1 person controls up to 4 chambers  The aim: reduce personal Remote control of locks: What is remote control?

WagnerT/MilbradtT S3S3 Situation before Remote Control

WagnerT/MilbradtT S4S4 Situation since Remote Control

WagnerT/MilbradtT S5S5 Lock control center Operator station

WagnerT/MilbradtT S6S6 Lock control center Control center for 4 locks

WagnerT/MilbradtT S7S7 Each remote controlled lock is associated with one operator station If an operator station should fail (emergency) it can be switched to another operator station If the energy supply should fail an emergency operation (about 1 hour under full load) is still possible If the transmission paths should fail, local operation is still possible All operating controls which are needed for the procedure of the lock process, are available at every operator station Every dangerous area is monitored by a permanently assigned camera / monitor Lock control center Technical basics (1)

WagnerT/MilbradtT S8S8 Dangerous areas which require special attention are: Lower and upper outer harbor Lower and upper gate, if applicable middle gate Lower and upper sub-chamber Main route to the lock These areas have to be monitored each with an extra camera Lock control center Technical basics (2)

WagnerT/MilbradtT S9S9 The recording is done by video cameras which are fixed at stationary 12m or 18m high masts The cameras are equipped with zoom lens and pan-tilt heads If a camera should fail, further operation is still ensured by panning the next camera The display on the operator station is done on single screens in the flow direction of the river. This is the same view which also the shift supervisor has when working on- site Lock control center Technical basics (3)

WagnerT/MilbradtT S10 Besides dangerous areas the following information is transferred All information of the Programmable Logic Controller (state of control with status and error messages) All control commands Entry and exit signals All communication Waterway gauge Other hydrological data (e.g. water temperature) Lock control center Technical basics (4)
