02 a. Analysis of local situations and definition of common databases to monitor environmental performances of port areas Each partner will produce detailed documentation of the activities hosted in its port area, the environmental impacts produced, the management system adopted, problems solved or unsolved, the possible solutions, the best practices implemented, the fields of co-operation with the City Authority, the relationship problems with the city and the region, etc. The local documentation will be produced according to a common format drawn up in technical workshops, containing the definition of a set of environmental and sustainability indicators for the port areas. The data contained in each local documentation will be assembled and managed in a common data base, the starting point for access to the world of EMS. IONAS Thessaloniki, 22 September Plan of activities for the ACTION 2

03 b. EMS pre-implementation training and design activities Working with training workshops (also on-line) each port area will get familiar with terminology used in EMS and will gain an opportunity to understand EMS in their city context. A workbook on EMS implementation in the Adriatic + Ionian region will be compiled starting from the workshops activities. Partners will leave the project with an EMS “personalized” workplan and instructions on how to implement it. The local Plans for Port EMS will contain analysis and commitments of each partners towards a full-effective implementation of EMS in their own port areas by the following years. The Environmental Management System is the part of the overall management system that includes the organisational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the environmental policy (EMAS Regulation, EC 761/2001) The EMS has a key role in ensuring that the bodies designated by competent authorities can meet their environmental obligations, and that the tools of sustainable development are implemented…. 11 A.CTW 1 – Italy – Ancona, 24 June 2005 A lot of activities, but on the Tirrenian sea. The Adriatic italian ports are actually not really engaged on EMS implementation. Only some specific and sectorial activities for the prevention of environmental impacts (wastes and so on). B.CTW 2 – Montenegro, Croatia and Albania – Bar, 12 September 2005 A strong environmental activities in the ports of Dubrovnik, Bar and Durres. The last two are already working along the EMS process. C. CTW 3 – Greece – Thessaloniki, 22 Sept Quite good level of Greek ports (Thessaloniki and Pireus) on environmental issues and on EMS implementation. Definition of the IONAS milestones. IONAS Thessaloniki, 22 September What we have done.....

12 1.Collecting data for a common knowledge - acquire the excel-sheets tool from the OBP Wien - provide it to the partners (plus the IONAS friends) by the end ‘05 - each Port Authority must ultimate the input of data, with the technical assistance of OBP and IONAS secretariat, by July ‘06 (?) 2.Elaborating the IONAS/EMS handbook - provide a first draft of it by the end of ‘05. It must be conceived as work-in-progress. 3.Defining personalized “ecomaps” of environmental problems and risks for each port area - by means of a set of “face to face” matching meetings during the next IONAS workshop (Slovenia in March and Venice in October) IONAS Thessaloniki, 22 September The IONAS milestones
