Supporting FSGPT with Language Support By: Carolyn Lee, Debra Nix, & Patrick Beacham
We will investigate Frequent Small Group Purposeful Talk (FSGPT) structures and strategies to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in the general education classroom. I will complete one FSGPT strategy with my group and present it to the whole group. Framing Our Lesson
Frequency – Incorporate FSGPT after every 10 minutes of teacher talk Group size – 2-4 students Power zone – teacher needs to be in the power zone and actively listening/scaffolding when necessary Frequent Small Group Purposeful Talk (FSGPT) Review
Why is FSGPT critical to the success of English Language Learners? What does FSGPT currently look like at your campus? Turn and Talk
P – Positive Interdependence I – Individual Accountability E – Equal Participation S – Simultaneous Interaction Adapted from: Kagan Cooperative Learning Norms for FSGPT
Reflect on your group’s interaction during the Turn and Talk activity. Did your group follow some/all of the PIES norms? Post your short response to Today’s MeetToday’s Meet PIES
Structures How students are grouped and how they interact Strategies vs. Structures Strategies Activities students complete during FSGPT
Playing Cards: As the teacher, you would already have in mind how you would want to group students based on the activity. Talking Chips: During your group activities, each person in the group will have to use 2 chips by the end of your activity. You use a chip every time you talk. Structures
Each group will get a card with a group activity that explains a strategy that we have found to be effective with ELLs: Graffiti Writing Brick and Mortar Cards Backwards Book Walk Vocabulary Game Show W.I.T.H. Questioning You will have 15 minutes to complete the activity on the card and create a poster to present the information about that activity to the group. Strategies
You are going to share with your elbow partner. Each partner will have exactly 1 minute to share how they could use the strategies/structures on their campus When the timer goes off, that is your cue for Partner 1 to stop and Partner 2 to begin Round Robin
