InfoVis Final Project Summary Andrew Lawrence

Introduction Part Data Story and part how-to guide for those interested in building their own religion data story. Why a religion DataStory? Explores intersection between faith and public life.

Organization Getting the Data Cleaning the Data Building the Story A Religion DataStory Thoughts on building a DataStory References and Resources

Getting and Preparing the Data Where to find robust Religion data-sets Step 1 – Obtain one or more large data-sets to be used for your DataStory or visualization. Step 2 – Convert data for use in Tableau. Converting SPSS (.SAV) filetype for use in Google Refine or other spreadsheet software. Step 3 – clean data and perform some formatting actions to make it usable in Tableau or other visualization tools Step 4 – Export or save your data in a.CSV or.XLS format for importing into your selected visualization tool.

Building the Story Video “how-to” project examines and demonstrates some of the techniques I used for building the DataStory project. The fist step in developing any DataStory is trying to decide on what data you want to represent and how you want to represent it.

A Religion DataStory This section of the site presents the Religion DataStory. Video examines “lessons learned” and explores some possibilities for future data use.

Some thoughts on DataStories Frame the story Determine the story type Pictures are worth a thousand words Use foundations of human visual perception Bring the story to a resolution
