Presentation transcript:

Thursday, August 14 th, 2014 Mrs. Sosa

 Deer Canyon has opted to move away from G.A.T.E. clustering and has evenly dispersed G.A.T.E. students throughout each grade level.  Teachers are expected to differentiate for their gifted student.

 Each teacher is different.  In my classroom you can expect differentiation to occur in one of the following ways: ◦ Acceleration ◦ Depth ◦ Complexity ◦ Novelty

AccelerationDepthComplexityNovelty -Concept Building and Bridging -Universal Concepts -Introduction to the Disciplines -Thinking Like a Disciplinarian -Art of Appreciation -Questioning -Language of the Discipline -Details -Patterns -Trends -Unanswered Questions -Rules -Ethics -Big Ideas -Impact -Process -Motive -Proof -Over Time -Points of View -Interdisciplinary Connections -Context -Translate -Original -Judgment -Creative Thinking -Critical Thinking -Problem Solving -Logic -Development of Self- Accountability -Task Commitment -Establishment of Interpersonal and Collaborative skills -Intellectualism -Development of Expertise -Art of Argumentation -Participation Skills

 Increased Argument ◦ Research with evidence from grade-appropriate text.  Grapple Regularly & Purposefully with Complex Texts ◦ At least 50% Non-fiction!  Think Like a Researcher ◦ Point of View  Grow Non-Cognitive Skills ◦ Perseverance, Trial and Error, Persistence  Every Kid Speaks, Every Day!  Write Like Crazy

 Students will meet on a monthly basis for an enrichment opportunity. ◦ Field Trips & Activities (See schedule)  The school district hosts two district-wide events each year. ◦ Activities & Chess Tournament  Saturday, October 11th ◦ Spelling Bee  Tuesday, March 17th

 Our district newsletter has gone digital!  Information can be reached at the following link:  Or you can access this page by going to the district website and choosing Educational Services under the departments tab. On the left hand side, choose the Gifted and Talented Education page.

 G.A.T.E parent, student and staff program evaluation surveys are conducted in April.  Your feedback is critical!
