My Career Compass to Becoming a Carpenter By Jaden Rudland

Short Term Goals My short term goals for becoming a carpenter are to finish high school with high marks in Math, English 12, English 12 first peoples, and Communications 12. After high school I will try to get into the British Columbia Institute of Technology and then after that I will become an apprentice at the same college.

Long Term Goals My long term goals for becoming a carpenter are to become high up in the ranks as a carpenter and be well respected. Also once I have enough money and experience I will buy some property right on a lake and then build an amazing house or vacation house for me and my family to enjoy!

Skills, Attributes, Characteristics Skills needed to become a carpenter are that you have to be able to work well with your hands, you will need to know how to operate and work with tools and machines, you should be good at counting and measuring, you must have a close attention to detail, and you will have to be able to complete small detailed tasks Attributes needed to become a carpenter are you have healthy and athletic, well balanced, smart, and situationally aware Some characteristics you must have to become a carpenter are that you have to be honest, reliable, chatty, loud and you have to be a quick thinker

Education To become a Carpenter you must have your trade certification which you get by taking a test after your apprenticeship. You can also get your Red Seal after your apprenticeship which allows you to work in any province in your country. To become an apprentice, you first must go to college and then take and complete a carpenter course

What is a Carpenter? A carpenter builds the wooden frameworks that hold up houses and buildings. They also install finishing trim work such as cabinets, doors, and stairs

Salary Carpenters salary can vary on many different things. The location, the size, if your part- time, and if your full-time. Part-time carpenters can get paid from $20-$40 an hour but Full-time carpenters can get paid $42,000-$$83,000 a year.

Post-Secondary After high school I will go to the British Columbia College Institute of Technology in Burnaby B.C and take the Carpentry Framing and Forming Foundation program. To get into this college you will need to take Math 12, English 12, English 12 First peoples, Communications 12, and you will need your high school diploma. The Carpentry Framing and Forming Foundation is a $3400 and 23 week long program where you will learn the occupational skills, formwork, framing, and interior/exterior finishing for becoming a carpenter. After college I will take a 4 year long apprenticeship program at the same college where I will get hands on training and experience and also get my Trade Certification and my Red Seal.
