PKES P ASSIVE K EY E NTRY AND S TART A convenience feature available with most new cars above “cheap tin box” level. I can steal your car! Presented for the Personal Computer Club of Charlotte June 11,

Welcome home. Drop your key in the basket by the door. Your car is continuously sending a short range signal looking for your key. A burglar comes by. The burglar has an amplifier to extend the signal from the car up to 300 feet. The key replies with a long range signal to open the car door. Click the mouse to proceed.

Now the burglar can ransack any valuables you’ve left in the car. The same strategy – with an additional amplifier – can be used to allow the Start button to function. Then the burglar can drive off with the car. It will continue to run even after it’s out of range of the amplified signal from the key. PKES P ASSIVE K EY E NTRY AND S TART
