Conferences – Oral presentations Most larger conferences have simultaneous oral presentations in different rooms –Extremely important to stay on time participants switch rooms to listen to interesting talks Respecting the timeframe is vital If 10 min for presentation and 5 for discussion stop after 10 min

Oral presentations - Staying on time What is important??? –Introduction/background? –Aims? –Materials and methods? –Results? –Discussion? –Conclusion?

Staying on time You can say what you need to say, in the time you are given! –Know your priorities

Uppbygging glæru (slide design) Þegar við höldum erindi er ekki gott að fylla glæruna með (miklu) lesmáli og lesa svo orðrétt upp af henni fyrir áheyrendurna Ástæðan er meðal annars sú að áheyrendurnir eru mun fljótari að lesa, í huganum, það sem stendur á glærunni heldur en sá sem heldur fyrirlesturinn er að lesa það upphátt Réttu upp hönd þegar þú hefur lesið allt lesmálið á þessari glæru!

Slide design Few points pr slide Few words pr sentence –Bullet points, no sentences Few slides –Each slide up for 1-2 min, no less than ½ min Simple tables –If complicated tables, lead the audience through, pull out main things Simple graphs

Presentations do’s and don’ts Speak slowly and clearly Remember to breath Talk to the audience (not the slides) Beware of (bad)-habits (kækir) and pause or filler-words (hik-orð og tafs) –þú veist, hérna, sko, heyrðu, osfrv. –uh, erm, well, et crt.

Presentations do’s and don’ts Do not stroll all over the stage Do not stand still like a stick Do not read from slides Avoid reading from paper –Better to read than not knowing what to say –Use paper with bullet points to lead you through the presentation

Presentations Practice, rehearse –In front of the computer –In front of a mirror –Abuse friends, colleagues, relatives, husbands/wifes et ctr.
