September 2 & 3 Welcome Assignment Draw a circle map Write what you know about rocks, minerals, and crystals Rocks, minerals, & crystals Brainstorm here, What you know

Focus on Minerals Key Concepts: “Inside Earth” textbook page 114 Section 1textbook Complete two Tree Maps to answer the two main Key Concept questions. (Hint: Tree Map categories are determined by the subtitles of each section.) Give the DEFINITION and an EXAMPLE for each category Click on the “Textbook” word at the top to access the online textbook. Username: team8A Password freestylers What is a mineral? How are minerals identified?

September 3 & 4 Welcome Assignment Pick up Science Notebook –Work on notes from last class period if you have not completed them. (page 114, completing 2 Tree Maps on Minerals) Planner - Homework: teenbiz3000 articles due Sept 24 th. –“Still Shaky” –“Earthquake Shakes Up Hawaii”

Rocks, Minerals, & Crystals How are rocks, minerals, and crystals different from each other? How are rocks, minerals, and crystals related?

Three main types of rock and Processes Igneous –Comes from cooling Magma/Lava or other Volcanic Activity –Forms from melting and cooling Sedimentary –Comes from sediment material –Forms from great pressure compacting and cementing the sediment together Metamorphic –Comes from other rock –Forms from great heat and pressure, resulting in a change of appearance, texture, crystal structure, and mineral content.

Rock Cycle 3D Model w/ Play-Doh Turn to page 165 in the textbook Figure out a way to use Play-Doh to demonstrate how one type of rock forms another type. Your group must… –Use all of the Play-Doh on your diagram –Show all of the main types of rock in your diagram –Draw arrows and captions to show the flow of the cycle –Write 2 different flow maps to show how Metamorphic Rock can once again become sedimentary rock.
