THE PROCESS & TYPES OF SOURCES An Introduction to Research

1. Develop your Research Question & Thesis The research question is what guides you through selecting sources and choosing relevant information. It is the question your thesis is trying to answer. What is the most important problem for combatting climate change in the United States? Your thesis is your proposed answer to your research question. It may change throughout your project. The most important problem for combatting climate change in the United States is transportation emissions.

1. Develop your Research Question & Thesis Choose the research question that fits with the size of your project: What is the 2010 rate of juvenile delinquency in the U.S.? What can we do to reduce juvenile delinquency in the U.S.? Does education play a role in reducing juvenile delinquents' return to crime?

Find sources-library catalogues & databases For primary sources, academic papers, peer- reviewed sources, some encyclopedias, and select journalism, head to a Library Database For secondary sources, journalism, some encyclopedias, and some literature, a Web Search may do (beware infotainment) For encyclopedia entries, literature, books, and some academic journals, use the Library Catalogue

Skim sources for major headings, keys, charts, tables and other textual features that help you figure out what sort of information is included Read the sections of the text that are relevant to your research question & thesis Evaluate Sources with the checklist on page five Take notes that record key ideas and evidence that you could use as citations in your writing. Create annotations that help readers understand your sources

5. Organize processed information by topic Make notecards (physical or electronic) that allow you to move around the information in your notes Arrange information in a way that best fits your thesis Try a few different arrangements of topics for the best organization of your paper

6. Write information into a coherent narrative Write your thesis, outline, and information into one word document Start writing around these features, breaking down the formatting into the paper as you go Try to connect the different parts in one story, perhaps following a process, cause and effect, chronological, or compare/contrast modes of organization

7. Revise for publication (especially citation) Review your research paper for errors of fact, grammar, and usage. Revise sentences where your citation is wrong/takes over your argument According to Johnsonville, “the best brats are made with sufficient fat and key spices to move the eater into the zone of proximal heart attack” (138). Better: Industry publications claim that well-made brats take eaters into the “zone of proximal heart attack” using fat and spices (Johnsonville 138). Change some sentences or organization around to make your work easier for readers to understand (get some feedback)
