Art & Design – PAINTING and DRAWING (Assessed for Entry 3) Example Theme: Fashion

AC1.1 Select a range of references and resources to support painting and drawing work. The pupil has interpreted the theme of fashion in a very personal way. Initially looking at armour but then widening their research to include other aspects of warfare. This is perfectly acceptable.

AC1.2 Produce visual and / or tactile records of observations and experiences relating to a task or theme. This has been well covered with a number of examples.

AC1.3 Identify the influence of artists, craftspersons and / or designers on their own practice. There is clear evidence that the pupil has been influenced by the various forms of weaponry and architectural features studied. The pupil also makes references to computer game characters. This aspect also forms part of the overall work.

AC2.1 Select and handle materials, tools and techniques appropriate to painting and drawing. AC2.2 Use visual elements in practical work, such as: colour; pattern; texture; line; shape; form; space; tone. A number of painting and drawing materials and techniques have been used to good effect. Also, the visual elements, particularly line, tone, colour, texture and shape have been well covered.

AC2.3 Develop ideas for a pictorial composition, modifying work as needed. The pupil has developed a number of imaginative ideas including many complex plans for computer games based on conflict.

AC3.1 Use painting and drawing processes to produce an outcome in response to a task or theme. AC3.2 Present a resolved painting and drawing outcome with some consideration of refinement. The pupil has produced a number of large compositions. This example in particular is full of interesting detail and architectural features. It is apparent within this composition that the pupil has developed the ability to use perspective to create a sense of depth.

General Comments A thorough unit of work, well deserving an Entry 3. The pupil has produced a large amount of very personal, imaginative work. The initial theme of fashion has been developed into a broad range of ideas based on armour, weapons, fortifications and fantasy landscapes. Good use was made of sketchbooks and as well as imaginary compositions the pupil explored many computer game ideas on the theme of conflict.
