“ Intel 820 Chipset ” Intel 820 Chipset A Revolutionary Architecture for Mainstream Performance PCs in 2000 By … Miss Taungthong Wattarujeekrit Mr. Praditphong Soipetch

Outline Introduction and New Feature. Overview and Siblings Technology Background Low Pin Count Buses Chipset Architecture MCH ICH FWH

Introduction Intel 820 chipset offers new manageability and security features, and headroom for next- generation operating systems, application and processors. Two major new technologies AGP4x for graphic and multimedia Direc Rambus memory which double bandwidth in the critical areas of graphics and memory.

Introduction(Con) Five major initiatives reflected in the 820 chipset. Stable platforms. Constant computing Rich content delivery Platform security Manageability

The 820 Chipset:Overview & Siblings 820 Chipset designed to be platform of choice for the Pentium III processor. Supporting the higher-bus bandwidths and clock frequencies that this processor will deliver over is predecessor. 820 chipset support all desktop computing in Intel have 3 new platform chipset for user:810E,820 and 840.

Table1.Intel ’ s new platform chipsets.

The 820 Chipset:Overview & Siblings 820 Chipset used high-speed low pin count buses. This new architecture has double the aggregate bandwidth of it predecessor for intel 440 BX chipset in every critical area.

Technology Background The 820 chipset incorporate four highly controlled circuits or buses Processor system bus (PSB) Direct Rambus memory interface AGP4x Hub interface These buses are easily scaled by advancing their clock frequency, while their physical simplicity reduces the design challenges.

Table 2. The performance of the buses in the 820 chipset

Electrical Integrity:Summary The 820 chipset incorporates the following advances to contain the challenges of Maxwell ’ s equations. Hub Interface:A reduced pin count high-integrity bus for system interconnection. Direc Rambus for memory interconnect Advanced cabling for ATA-66 hard drive interconnect A new 1.5V signal level for AGP4x. This enchancements increase reliability and performance while lowering system cost.

The Bandwidth Challenge As processor technology advances, both clock rates and work performed per clock cycle will increase. So that 820 chipset outputforms its predecessor is increase, show on Table3.

Table3. System bandwidth comparison between Intel 820 and 440 chipset.

Validating Bandwidth Headroom Figure1 Shows the relative results of this test when run on the Intel 440BX chipset platform and the Intel 820 chipset platform The result: Intel 820 chipset have more B/W to access headroom than Intel 440BX about 2.26 time.

Low Pin Count Buses Table4. Hub interface 8-pin count

The intel 820 chipset system architecture

Chipset Architecture Intel ‘ s new 820 chipset consist of three components: A memory controller hub (MCH,82820 ) I/O controller hub (ICH, ) Firmware hub( FWH,82802)

Chipset Architecture The Hub architecture,high-speed buses also save pins. 820 chipset has a total of 565 pins between its two major components, compared with 816 on 440BX. So that manufacturing cost will be reduce and increased reliability. No bottle-neck from PCI protocol

Figure2. The intel 820 chipset system architecture details.

Table 4. Hub interface 8-pin count

MCH (Memory Controller Hub ) 33 pin PC600, PC700, PC800 Buffer support AGP2x Total Bandwidth 3.9 GB/sec

The FWH (Firmware Hub)

The Firmware Hub(FWH) The firmware hub incorporates system features that have no external interface. FWH includes 2 category. Flash Memory : its is boot flash memory for the system, and is available in both 4 Mb(512KN) and 8 Mb(1MB) configurations. Intel Random Number Generator (RNG):It is the great challenges to any secure system is the proper generationkeys.

Same south bridge in 440BX, but performs the higher bandwidth of the hub interface so that performance will be increase. It have a lot of feature Alert on LAN (AOL) Chassis Intrusion Processor Not Present Custom Messages Watchdog Timer Thermal Event Monitor The 82801AA I/O Controller Hub(ICH)

ATA-66 AC ’ 97(Audio Interface) Legacy I/O USB SMBus and GPIO PCI Bus Interface The 82801AA I/O Controller Hub(ICH)
