Today Quick CSA review CSA #3 Patterns of biodiversity Vocabulary

Objectives Have everyone pass the CSA with 80% or higher. Understand the pattern’s of biodiversity observed by Darwin.

CSA Review Mitosis/Cell Cycle/ Cancer Genetics Meiosis Genetic Engineering ANY QUESTIONS??

When you are finished Turn in your CSA up front Grab a vocabulary slip and work on quietly

Who the heck is Charles Darwin? Born in England in 1809 (same as Abraham Lincoln) Tried med school and clergy training Married his cousin (accepted in those days) and had 10 kids After his voyage on HMS Beagle ( ), Charles Darwin was chronically ill, having contracted what was eventually termed Chagas Disease April 19, 1882 he had a fatal heart attack and died

Voyage to the Galapagos Charles Darwin sailed on HMS Beagle for 5 years as a naturalist ( ) One of the major eye-opening stops on the journey for him was at the Galapagos Islands

Voyage of the HMS Beagle

Many interesting organisms were: Tortoises Lizards Birds And they varied from island to island

Ground finches and tree finches have different beaks to feed on different items, such as insects, seeds, and fruit.

Patterns of Biodiversity #1 Species vary globally – Different, yet ecologically similar, animal species inhabited separate but similar habitats – Examples:

Patterns of Biodiversity #2 Species vary locally – Different, yet related, animal species often occupy different habitats within an area – Ex:

Prior to the Polynesians arriving on the Hawaiian Islands approximately 1,500 years ago, the Hawaiian Honeycreepers were the dominant type of bird on the islands, numbering over 60 different species. Sadly, only 20 species survive today due mainly to human factors like hunting and habitat loss. Notice the differences in beaks relating to their diet.

More on Biodiversity Species vary over time – Fossils of extinct animals similar to those of living species – Ex:
