IMPERIALISM Case Study: NIGERIA

1. How did the British control Nigeria & other British colonies? Allowed Existing Leaders to remain but under British authority. Local officials managed daily affairs

2. What method of management did the French use w/ their colonies? Direct control through paternalism & assimilation

Algeria’s resistance was active. 3. How did Algeria’s resistance to French rule differ from the E. Africans’ resistance to German rule? Algeria’s resistance was active. E. Africans used a “spiritual defense”

4. Why was Ethiopia able to successfully resist European rule? Used Italy’s enemies against them. Britain & France equipped Ethiopia Defeated Italy at Adowa. (Menelik II)

5. How did Africans benefit from colonial rule? Reduced local warfare Improved education, Sanitation, Transportation, Communication African products gained value on the market
