Chapter 30 Section 3 Axis Gains World History III Mr. Love Part One

The “Phony War”  Hitler’s invasion of Poland, the blitzkrieg, showed the world a new kind of fighting.  Used great speed and force.  France began to move its forces to the Maginot Line.  British forces landed on the northern edge of France and blockaded the German ports.  There was actual little action on the Western Front and it became known as a Phony War.

The Soviets  The Soviets began to invade Eastern European countries and split them up with the Nazis.

Scandinavia and the Low Countries  The Phony War ended with the invasion of Denmark and Norway.  The Germans were able to get help from collaborators, or people willing to help their country’s enemy.  Now Germany had access to the Atlantic Ocean for their submarine fleets.

Scandinavia and the Low Countries  Winston Churchill becomes British Prime Minister. He had always opposed appeasement.  The Germans move to outflank the Maginot Line and are able to surround a great deal of French and British soldiers at the port of Dunkerque.

Evacuation of Dunkerque  All available British ships were sent to Dunkerque to help evacuate the soldiers.  338,000 men were transported back to England.

The Fall of France  After Dunkurque, the French were too weak to defend itself. The Germans and Italians were able to defeat France.  The new French gov’t became known as the Vichy gov’t led by Phillippe Petain.  Germany now had control of France.

The French Resistance  Under the leadership of French General Charles de Gaulle, a resistance movement began to take hold.  Its headquarters were to be set up in London.  Resistance fighters in France became known as maquis.  Were famous for their acts of sabotage.
