» Organ that controls the special sense of sight.

» Amblyopia- lazy eye, commonly occurs in early childhood. » Astigmatism- abnormal shape of the cornea that causes blurred vision. » Conjunctivitis- pink eye, contagious inflammation.

» Glaucoma- increased traocular pressure with the eye. » Hyperopia- farsightedness. » Myopia- nearsightedness. » Cataract- clear lens becomes cloudy.

» Organ that controls hearing and balance.

» Meniere’s disease- collection of fluid in inner ear. » Otitis external- inflammation of external auditory canal. » Otitis media- inflammation of the middle ear. » Otosclerosis- stapes become immobile.

» A mass muscle tissue with projections called papillae, which contains taste buds that are stimulated by the flavors of food.

» The nose is the organ of smell. The sense of smell is made possible by olfactory receptors, which are located in the upper part of the nasal cavity.. The human nose can detect over 6000 different smells.

» General sense receptors for pressure, heat, cold, touch, and pain are located throughout the body in the skin and connective tissue. Each receptor perceives only one type of sense. For example, the skin contains special receptors for heat and different receptors for cold. Messages from these receptors allow the human body to respond to its environment and help it react to conditions that can cause injury.
