Temple of Aphrodite

Theater Temple of Apollo Synagogue

The birth of Venus (Aphrodite)- the Goddess of Beauty intercourse with her priestesses was considered a method of worshiping Aphrodite

Corinthianize - meaning participation in immoral sexual practices, "Not every man is man enough to go to Corinth.“ -Strabo spoke of a thousand Aphrodite temple prostitutes during 3-4 th cent. BC "Old" Corinth, was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC and the site was abandoned for a century. Julius Caesar had Corinth rebuilt in 44 BC as a Roman colony. Corinth was the largest city Paul had ever set foot in when he arrived there to begin the ministry described in Acts 18:1-18. During New Testament times Corinth was the home of Isthmian Games held every other year. The church at Corinth included Jews, Greeks, slaves, and freedmen. 1 Corinthians 12:13 The picture that emerges is one of a predominantly Gentile community, the majority of whom were at the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder, although there were two or three wealthy families. As former pagans they brought to the Christian faith a Hellenistic world view and attitude toward ethical behavior. Although they were the Christian church in Corinth, an inordinate amount of Corinth was yet in them emerging in a number of attitudes and behaviors that required radical surgery without killing the patient. This is what 1 Corinthians attempts to do. - Gordon Fee

That holiness is not to be achieved by withdrawing from sinners and a godless world. Rather, it is to be pursued in the confusing whirlpool of conflicting cultures, personalities, and values. That is, holiness is to be pursued in the kind of world in which we still live.
