Management Development  Management development is a systematic process of growth and development by which the managers develop their ability to manage.

Management Development Programme (MDP)  Education + training = Development  A systematic process of growth and development by which the managers develop their abilities to manage.  It is mainly concerned with improving the performance of managers by giving them opportunities for growth and development  The role of the organization or company is to establish the programme & development opportunities for its present and potential managers

OBJECTIVES OF MDP  Stimulate creative thinking  Identification of managers with required potential and prepare them for potential responsibilities  Management Succession  To give the specialists an overall view of the functions of an organization.  To keep the executives abreast with latest Management Thoughts

Objective of Management Development  To overhaul the management machinery  To improve the performance of manager  To increase the versatility of management group  To improve thought process and analytical ability  To broaden outlook of executives regarding his role and responsibility

 To understand conceptual issue  To increase morale  To understand the problem of human relation and improve human relations skill  To improve thought process and analytical ability

Need for MDP  Managers with Technical educational background need to sharpen their managerial skills.  Human Resource Development of the managers in multiple areas need MDPs  Emergence of new concepts in management like Quality Circles, TQM,ERP,BPR Empowerment etc necessitates the need for above  Changes in the Organization Structures and Strategies  To avoid Managerial level obsolescence

Essential Ingredients for Management Development  Analysis of organisational present and development need  Appraisal of present management talent  Inventory of management manpower  Planning of individual development  Establishment of development programme  Evaluation of programme

Basic requisites for success of management development  Top management should accept the responsibility and initiate and implement MD  Every manager must accept the direct responsibility for developing officer under his control on the job  MD must be geared to need of the company and individual  The policy of promotion from within is necessary incentive for managers to develop the organization  The selection of right people for MD.  The realistic time table in accordance with the company’s need

Principle of Management Development  Management should assess the needs of its managers at different levels  Integration of career planning & development of the organization with the MDP  It is a continuous process  It could be organized in house and externally by making use of outside agencies like IIMs, XLRI etc  The content of the programme should be need based for the individual manager and the organization

EVALUATION OF MDP  Whether objectives of programme met or not  The evaluation of the MDP should be done by some senior person in the organization  The evaluation official must be clear about goals and objectives of evaluation  Continuous and specific  Areas of evaluation include managerial skills,knowledge,technical skills, and knowledge  Evaluation may be conducted on training methods used  Evaluated area may depend on content of each MDP
