The QBone Project Roch Guerin Dept. Elec. Eng. University of Pennsylvania

What is the QBone? n The QBone is the first large scale effort to deploy Quality-of-Service in IP networks u Quality-of-Service  Service differentiation, i.e., a qualitative rather than quantitative model n Based on emerging IETF Differentiated Services (Diff-Serv) standards u Standard defines only local guarantees (per hop behavior) l Expedited and Assured Forwarding

The Diff-Serv Model n Two basic components u Traffic conditioners at the edge mark (DS byte) packets according to the service they are eligible for u Routers enforce different levels of service based on DS byte value n Extensions u Fine grain edge classification and policy decisions u Bandwidth brokers classification conditioning marking classification conditioning marking differentiated packet handling

Initial QBone Service n Emulation of Virtual Leased Line u Fixed bandwidth guarantee (no more, no less) u Traffic conditioning based on token bucket with small (one or two packets) burst tolerance n Rudimentary checking at edge routers u Policing for conformance with rate guarantee l Excess packets are dropped n Semi-static configuration u Manual provisioning of resources in backbone u Fixed set of source and destination addresses

Current QBone Configuration
