Sexually Transmitted Diseases ◦ Aka STD or STI ◦ Affect both men and women ◦ If not treated they can cause serious chronic conditions, sterility, or death

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome ◦ AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ◦ Attacks body’s immune system ◦ Body is not able to fight off infections ◦ Virus spread through sexual secretions, blood, or from infected mother to her infant during pregnancy or childbirth

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome ◦ No cure ◦ Combination of drugs known as a drug cocktail slows progression of the disease ◦ Prevention-standard precautions, condoms, avoid sharing needles

Chlamydia ◦ Bacterial infection ◦ Treated with antibiotics ◦ Symptoms-females can be asymptomatic, males can have dysuria ◦ Can cause PID and sterility in women if not treated

Gonorrhea ◦ Bacterial infection ◦ Treated with antibiotics ◦ An infected woman can transmit this to her infant’s eyes during childbirth and cause blindness ◦ Babies get antibiotic eye ointment as a prophylaxis

Herpes ◦ Viral infection ◦ No cure ◦ Virus stays in body, can experience repeated attacks ◦ Can be treated with antiviral medication to decrease the number and severity of recurrences

Syphilis ◦ Bacterial infection ◦ Treated with antibiotics ◦ Symptoms occur in 3 stages ◦ If it is not treated during the first 2 stages, the damage is irreversible and death occurs

Trichomoniasis ◦ Caused by a parasitic protozoa ◦ Main symptom is foul-smelling discharge ◦ Treated with antiparasitic oral medication

Pubic Lice ◦ Parasites that are transmitted sexually ◦ Can also be spread by contact with contaminated clothing or bed linens ◦ Symptoms=intense itching, redness of perineal area ◦ Treatment=medications to kill lice, wash all clothing & linens to destroy lice and nits (eggs)
