Aaron & Didith’s Wedding Ceremony A Multi-Media Presentation By Jessica Curtis EDTE 507 July 2009

Setting the Stage Aaron Curtis is my brother-in-law. Aaron met Didith on a preaching trip in the Philippines. She and her whole family lives there, so it was decided that the wedding should be in the Philippines. At $1,300 a ticket, our family could only afford to send two people. Tim, who was also the best man, and I served as representatives of our family at the wedding.

Target Audience This is a “Home Movie” of Aaron and Didith’s wedding ceremony. This video will be sent to the bride and groom and to both families. Much of Aaron’s family and friends were unable to attend due to the travel costs. There will be many people here in the States who will want the opportunity to view the video.

Purpose of Communication Aaron’s parents were unable to attend the wedding since it was in the Philippines. This video is the only way they can experience the wedding ceremony of their youngest son. This also serves as a memento of the day for Didith’s family and for Aaron and Didith.

Message to be Communicated To share the demonstration of the true love between Aaron and Didith with their friends and family. The video will share the experience of the wedding ceremony with anyone who sees it.

Production Values The wedding was a live-recorded ceremony uniting a real couple in legal marriage. The setting, costuming, and communicated messages were all decided upon by the bride and groom, their families, and participants. Image and Sound quality: Some video scenes were cut from the raw footage and soundtracks were laid over some final scenes to enhance aesthetics and to better communicate the intended message of the scene.

Direction – Camera Angles Shot in “Hand-Held” mode to give the Home Movie feel. Appropriate for conveying “reality of experience.” Camera work also included: Movement: Tilt, Pan, Zoom, Pedestal, Trucking Angles: Long, Full, 3/4, Medium, Close Up, Front and Neutral Camera angles were limited due to the event location and flower arrangements. Location of the event consisted of a rectangular church with a center isle and long tables on each side, which were lined with 4’ tall flower stands.

Direction – Composition Composition of the shots include: Rule of Thirds, Close ups, Long shots, Medium shots Headroom and Nose Room considered Natural Frames such as the archway Continuity in scene cuts as appropriate as possible Also, I had to consider where to stand to not block the other guests. I stood and/or sat in the rear of the church to best achieve this goal.

Videography & Sound Video Auto focus on camera created some strange focusing issues. Ex. During the Invocation, each new PPT slide forced the lens to refocus. No tripod! Because of the predictability of the action, a tripod would have produced smoother and clearer shots. Sound Only sound available through the built-in microphone. I was able to enhance some of the original audio in the scene by increasing the playback volume of the particular track. When the original track was unsatisfactory, I replaced the music tracks to match the action of the scene.

Editing Cuts were made to highlight the action of the event. I removed footage of people getting organized, switching places, etc. I used transitions between cuts: Title frames were added before major action. Page Curl transitions were added to all splits. All transitions match in timing and design. I also overlaid text to add commentary. To do this, I had to cut the clip each time. There are 68 cuts total! Editing the hand-held camera footage provides a sense of continuity and a touch of sophistication to the Home Movie look and feel.
