Presentation transcript:

Progress Report from NFC Working Group General Meeting Copenhagen 18 April 2013 Round Table 1

NFC Working Group Near Field Communication – Radio frequency communication between electronic devices in close proximity (~4cm) – NFC standards cover communication protocols and data exchange formats, based on existing radio-frequency identification (RFID) standards including ISO/IEC (contactless cards) – Communication can be active/active or active/passive – Possible applications Payment (e.g. ticketing) Non-payment (information, access control) – NFC can enable integrated applications combining ticketing with travel planning or loyalty programmes to enhance the travel experience European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group NFC enabled mobile phones European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions Phones emulate contactless smartcards Payment applications require secure element SE in the SIM card SE embedded SE providers could be MNO Phone manufacturers Application providers, banks...  New players in the ticketing market!

NFC Working Group NFC enabled mobile phones European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions Phones emulate contactless smartcards Payment applications require secure element SE in the SIM card SE embedded SE providers could be MNO Phone manufacturers Application providers, banks...  New players in the ticketing market!

NFC Working Group EMTA Working group NFC ticketing TfL- London, UK STIF- Paris, FR ATM- Barcelona, ES SL- Stockholm, SE Ruter- Oslo, NO ZTM- Warshaw, PL Focus of work- NFC and CPC (contactless payment cards) Pilots maybe either solution or mixed European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group WG Objectives To improve knowledge on NFC ticketing added value To understand the NFC ecosystem To review NFC technology options To analyse NFC ticketing applications and projects implemented or planned in WG member networks To collect best practices To prepare an EMTA official position on NFC ticketing European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group Motivation for pilot projects – To reduce management effort – To reduce investment into tickets – To develop customer-friendly solutions for ticketing and information – To develop a fast and reliable ticketing system with best fare calculation – To create a modern and innovative image – To anticipate on seamless travel in network European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group Pilot ticket types – Single journeys – Multiple journeys – Periodic passes (season tickets) – Best fare solutions with capping (single journeys do not add up to more than a daily/weekly ticket) European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group Market – NFC eco-system differs across the countries (e.g. MNO are drivers in France, banks are pro-active in the UK) – PT ticketing is seen as an attractive market by external parties ( PT application is widely considered the “killer application” that would allow mass adoption) – Still not mature, lack of experience from all sides – Complex and complicated negotiations European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group Technology – A lot of potential, but not as advanced as promised by MNO – Still limited availability of NFC phones – Shortage of SIM card storing the SE – Communication problems between antenna and validators – Transaction times too long – A lot of experimentation, but a lack of standardisation European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group Though smart card technology has reached a level of maturity, NFC has not (yet) We need more experience and input into discussions Also pilot ideas that have not been realised would provide very useful lessons Key problem is the lack of a business model, involving all parties in the NFC ecosystem, which is advantageous for public transport Technology market should be influenced to ensure PT stakeholders obtaining better solutions, optimised to PTA’s specific needs Risk allocation needs to be sorted out (insufficient card or e-wallet balance, technical failures) European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions

NFC Working Group EMTA WG is preparing a paper discussing the main elements and stakes of NFC implementation in PT A questionnaire is available aiming to collect existing experiences of NFC pilots and plans EMTA can provide more critical mass than individual organisations in trying to unlock the potential of NFC Join NFC working group! Next meeting in Oslo 4/5 June 2013 European level Membershi p Surveys Working groups What is NFC? Experience so far Conclusions
