DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA AND NEEDS ANALYSIS  Cooperation in research and development emphasizes two key parts of basic research: technical investigation of the activities of Saints Cyril and Methodius during the period of the Great Moravian Empire; and research of the legacy of the Cyril and Methodius tradition in the 19 th and 20 th centuries  Necessary linkage to further activities within the framework of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius  Basic research in terms of the character of scientific work will play the primary role in the research part of activities relating to the cultural route.  Consequently, the results of the basic research will be applied in activities having a cultural and educational impact on the general public AREA 1: COOPERATION IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE AREA Aim 1 Complex assessment of the life of Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius in European historiography.  Constantine and Methodius prior to their arrival to the Great Moravian Empire, missionary work in the GME, the influence of their missions on relations in the GME with the East Frankish Empire, with Rome and the Byzantines, religious, cultural, church, legal impacts of the mission of Cyril and Methodius Aim 2 Utilization of the legend of Cyril and Methodius in emancipating national identities of individual Slavic nations.  Influence of the Cyril and Methodius tradition in formation of national identities in Central and Southeastern Europe  role of the Cyril and Methodius tradition in the 20 th century, its transformation into a symbol of anti-Nazi and anti-Communist resistance  contemporary reception of the Cyril and Methodius idea in post- Communist society and their role as patrons of Europe AREA 1: COOPERATION IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

AREA COORDINATOR Charles University in Prague Charles University is the largest and most important Czech university with the highest international recognition. Science and research form an important part of the activity of Charles University, whose priority is to further develop the prestigious position of the so-called scientific university. Academy of Sciences of the CR The AS CR is one of the oldest and most important scientific organizations in the Czech Republic, whose roots reach back to the late-18 th century. The main mission of the Academy of Sciences and their workplaces is to implement basic research in a wide range of natural, technical and social science as well as humanities. AREA 1: COOPERATION IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

PARTNERS / STAKEHOLDERS  This mainly concerns university departments in Europe (e.g. Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, University of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, University of Macedonia, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje  It also concerns scientific workplaces dealing with Saints Cyril and Methodius and their tradition (e.g. the Institute for Research of the Cultural Heritage of Constantine and Methodius of FA CPU in Nitra, the Research Center of Cyril and Methodius at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, etc.)  Czech workplaces: FA MU in Brno, Moravian Museum in Brno, Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology in Olomouc, National Museum in Prague AREA 1: COOPERATION IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

SUMMARY The main aim of the area Cooperation in Research and Development is technical research and its consequent application into educational and cultural activities. The task is to show the importance of the deeds and activities of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Great Moravian Empire, and the influence that their work continued to have after the empire crumbled within successive medieval states and later in the 19 th and 20 th century. Results will have an impact not only on the technical public, but their application will strengthen the historical memory reflecting on Saints Cyril and Methodius amongst the general public as well.
