Identify existing challenges Suggest short and long term solutions Our ideas about the new organizational structure

Existing Challenges Strategic Plan Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding Technology Marketing Enrollment Recruitment Retention Athletics Additional Sources of Revenue

Strategic Plan Identify West Tennessee College’s (WTC) Strategic Goals Connect Institutional Goals and Objectives to Budget Data-driven Decision Making Based on Plan

Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding PETER SENGE Senge created “The Five Disciplines.” Senge had a vision of a learning organization as a group of people who are continually enhancing their capabilities to create what they want to create.

Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding THE FIVE DISCIPLINES Systems Thinking Personal Mastery Mental Models Building Shared Vision Team Learning

Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding THEORIES IN PRACTICE Transformational Leadership Path-Goal Theory Transactional Leadership

Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding “If everyone isn’t committed to the success of their teammates individually and collectively, then you don’t have a real team” (Carley, 1996, p. 41). Factions are common since organizations are mirrors of our society and are, therefore, dysfunctional (Kofman and Senge, 1993). Three problems that emerge from society into our organizations: fragmentation, competition, and reactiveness (Kofman and Senge, 1993).

Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding Teambuilding Decrease fragmentation/ competition and replace with supportive relationships. Open lines of communication. Working together for common goals. Recognizing the viewpoints and resources of everyone. GOAL = Teambuilding becomes WTC standard operating procedure from top administration through the ranks.

Leadership, Management Style, and Teambuilding Building partnerships with surrounding neighbors Enhance communication and interaction among College stakeholders Create internship partnerships with local businesses and community programs

Technology

Marketing Develop WTC’s Brand Interview Target Constituencies Coordinate Marketing Pieces Organize Marketing Campaign Focusing on the WTC’s Quality and Value

Enrollment: Recruitment Redesign WTC’s Website Variable Data Printing and Marketing Albertson College Social Networking Sites Relationship Building with Local Secondary Schools

Enrollment: Retention Develop and Institutionally-Supported Retention Plan Implement an Early Alert System for New Students Summer Programs Link Retention to the Strategic Plan Embrace Campus Diversity

Enrollment: Retention Federally-funded early intervention summer programs such as Upward Bound, target scholar and at-risk middle and high school students. Participants who complete 1 st year of college have higher GPA’s than similar students who did not attend program. Four times as likely to earn an undergraduate degree.

Enrollment: Retention Phase One Implement a summer, pre-college residential and day student program for high school students. Focus on ACT/SAT prep, literature, math, science, and theatre. Phase Two Host federally-funded Upward Bound early intervention program targeting at-risk high school students.

Athletics

Additional Revenue Sources Use existing campus facilities for hosting outside groups and private events. Raising revenue; increasing exposure and the number of outsiders who visit campus.

Additional Revenue Sources Phase One Join the Association of Conference and Events Directors International for Collegiate Conference and Event Professionals (ACED). Summer and Winter Break Rentals Residence halls, theatre, recreation field, and swimming pool. Year-round Rentals Art Museum, Garden beyond the Museum

New Organizational Structure Recruit and retain high quality faculty and staff Train new faculty by assigning mentor, tenured faculty Enhance current technology Increase grant funding through increased research

New Organizational Structure: Short Term Solutions Appoint local advisory board  The primary functions of the board are to offer advice and perspective on education issues; to provide a link between the college and business, government; and to serve as an advocate for the college in promoting academic programs and recruiting activities. The board will consist of alumni and prominent business people from the area. Place more emphasis on academic side of IT  This can be accomplished by allowing the librarian and Faculty Senate to work with the IT staff to ensure that students and faculty needs are met.

New Organizational Structure: Long Term Solutions Add more Library staff/update materials Adding more staff and updating materials will be beneficial to staff, students and faculty. Funding for Student Services/Sports It plays a role in retention and retaining students Implement workshops to further train Administrative staff Great way for staff to develop the experience they needed in working with computers
