JPN 312 (Fall 2007): Conversation and Composition Introduction

Course Website: The course schedule, links to course materials, lecture slides and other announcements will be posted on the website.

The main activities video viewing  vocabulary enhancement  listening comprehension  discussion on cultural concepts compositions (take-home) conversation & oral presentation practice (based on the textbook and additional material)

The grading basis Vocab. Quizzes:20 % HW #1 (Compositions): 30 % HW #2 (Radio Diary):10 % Final Exam:20 % Class Participation (& Oral presentation):20 %

Vocabulary Quizzes For each vocabulary quiz, I will upload two word lists. The one named: (2007_JPN312_VQ*) is a list of words which you are expected to be able to read (pronounce) and understand, but not to write in kanji. The one named: (2007_JPN312_VQ*_kanji) is a list of words which you are expected to be able to write in kanji, in addition to reading and understanding. The first VQ is on 1/18 (Thursday)

Compositions You will write (about) 5 compositions through the semester. The theme, the expected format/length, and the deadline will be announced in class and on the website. After receiving the instructor’s feedback, you need to turn in the revised draft with the first draft stapled together. Your compositions must be typed.

Radio Diary (Weekly) Read carefully the radio diary instruction. You are allowed to skip this assignment up to 3 times without penalty. Your diary can be brief – the important part is to make it a custom to listening to Japanese conversations. The first radio diary is due on 1/23.

Final Exam In writing. Mainly based on the material in the text book. A “study guide” will be distributed toward the end of the semester.
