Some people didn’t agree with the New England Way Roger Williams (founder of the first Baptist Church in America). Opposed forced attendance at church. Opposed the English taking Indians lands by force. Founded Rhode Island – which guaranteed religious freedom and separation of church and state (government). Anne Hutchinson Believed a person could worship God without the help of a church, a minister, or the Bible. Had a trial, and eventually moved to Rhode Island. D

New York Was originally settled by the Dutch (people from the Netherlands) The king of England wanted to get the Dutch out of New Netherland, and give he land to his brother……… …the Duke of York D
New Jersey The Duke of York owned more land than anyone else in North America and gave a little of what he had to two of his friends. This became New Jersey D
Pennsylvania D William Penn became another wealthy landowner. He changed his religion and became a Quaker. King Charles II owed Penn’s family money, and gave them a large piece of land – now Pennsylvania (Penn’s woods) More on next slide D
Pennsylvania D Was a land first settled by Quakers. Quakers believed all people should live together in peace and harmony. They welcomed different religions and ethnic groups. They wanted the Indians to be treated fairly. It became one of the wealthiest colonies. Many people came for religious freedom and a better life. D
Delaware Three counties in the lower part of Pennsylvania broke away to form their own colony Place where Swedes built the first log cabins. D
