George Cosbuc

George Cosbuc - a great representative of Romanian literature was a real pioneer,a brilliant innovator. His work is fresh and rigorous. Cosbuc came from a Transylvanian region where the preservation of folk customs and traditions, of the nation language and history, was the element that dominated the spiritual life of the population. His creations brings out also a Messianic vein, singing the joys and woes of his people. His verse reminds of Robert Burns`. Arghezi is perhaps the most striking figure of Romanian interwar literature, and one of the major poets of the 20th century. Alexandru Macedonski

Alexandru Macedonski published his first volume of poems when he was 18, under the title Prima Verba. In 1880 he founded the review Literatorul (The Literate), in which he presented himself as a defender of art with a social character. The review also included creations of many young writers. Macedonski was an anti-royalist and he supported his views by publishing pamphlets. Macedonski is considered the predecessor of Romanian symbolism. Vasile Alecsandri Vasile Alecsandri

Vasile Alecsandri played leading part in the revolutionary movement of 1848 in Moldavia. It was during those days of patriotic upsurge that he wrote his poem Desteptarea Romaniei (Romania`s Awakening), which carried a revolutionary and unionist message. After the Union of the Principalities (1859), he became Minister of Foreign Affairs. His most important volumes of poems are: Pasteluri (Pastels) and Ostasii nostri (Our Soldiers). LUCIAN BLAGA

Lucian Blaga was a commanding personality of the Romanian culture of the inter-bellum period. He was a philosopher and writer acclaimed for his originality, a university professor and a diplomat. He was born on May 9, 1895 in Lancrăm, near Alba Iulia, Romania, into a family of priests. Although he could speak he did not speak any words until he was four, and he later described his early childhood as "under the sign of the incredible absence of word". Creangă‘ s main contribution to fantasy and children's literature includes narratives structured around eponymous protagonists ("Harap Alb", "Ivan Turbincă", "Dănilă Prepeleac"), as well as fairy tales indebted to conventional forms ("The Goat and Her Three Kids").
