The Main Character The main character is Kirsten. Kirsten is a brave pioneer in Kirsten lives with her cousins and aunt and uncle. She has a fourteen year old brother named Lars. She also has a six year old brother named Peter. Kirsten has to learn how to speak English, say a poem, do sums, read, and writing.

Setting 2 The setting was always changing. Kirsten sometimes went to see her friend Singing Bird in the morning at the stream. One time Kirsten got invited to go to the Indian Village. She went to school every day in the morning. She also volunteers to go to the stream to get water so her classmates can have a drink. Kirsten and her cousins Lisbeth and Anna also have a fort by a Cherry tree.

Plot The story is a about a Swedish girl named Kirsten Larson who lives in Minnesota. Kirsten has to go to school and learn how to write, read, and say a poem. She has trouble speaking English but can speak a little English. Her new teacher comes to live with the Larsons for awhile. Kirsten wasn’t very excited at first, but then she actually kind of liked it. Kirsten makes friends with an Indian girl named Singing Bird and keeps her a secret.

Problems Kirsten can’t speak English very well. Kirsten has to recite a poem in front of the whole class, but she is nervous. Kirsten meets an Indian girl named Singing Bird and they become good friends. Kirsten has to keep it a secret for a long time. Can she keep it that long? Then Singing Bird ‘s tribe runs out of food. Singing Bird wants Kirsten to go with her tribe to find more food.

Solutions Kirsten learns how to speak English and becomes good at it. She also learns to write English. Kirsten tries to learn her poem, but then she gets a new poem that she can memorize better than the old one. She keeps the secret that she is friends with an Indian. Will she come with Singing Bird? Will Kirsten have the courage to say the poem? But… Can she keep Singing Bird a secret? Read the book to find out what happens!
