Indiana University Abilene NOC Abilene ITN Engineering Brent Sweeny Indiana University I2 member meeting, 31 Oct 2000

Indiana University Abilene NOC What is ITN? ä Basically, that participating peer networks can talk with each other across Abilene (and CA*net3, and STAR TAP)*. ä * (for CA*net3 and STAR TAP peers’ traffic to be accepted by Abilene, there must be an Abilene MoU for that peer. Examples of outliers: MIRnet, GEMnet)

Indiana University Abilene NOC Current Abilene Peer Networks ä 32 connections to 19 peer networks ä USA: vBNS, Esnet, NREN, NISN, DREN ä 14 non-USA networks in Asia, Europe, Middle East, South America ä Non-USA connections at Chicago, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles

Indiana University Abilene NOC Abilene ITN Peer Networks ä APAN (Asia-Pacific: Korea, Japan, Australia, Singapore) ä CA*Net3 (Canada) ä CERNET (China) ä CUDI (Mexico) ä IUCC (Israel) ä JANET (U.K.) ä NORDUnet (Scandanavian countries) ä RENATER (France) ä REUNA2 (Chile) ä SINET (Japan: a.k.a. NII) ä SingAREN (Singapore) ä SURFnet (Netherlands) ä TANET2 (Taiwan) ä vBNS (USA)

Indiana University Abilene NOC Abilene ITN non-participants ä USA “Fednets” ä DANTE/GEANT (ARNES, BELNET, CESnet, DFN-Verein, GIP RENATER, GRNET, HEAnet, HUNGARNET, INFN- GARR, Israel-IUCC, POL-34, RCCN, RedIRIS, RESTENA, SWITCH)—but DANTE is a special case…

Indiana University Abilene NOC How is it done? ä Peers were polled (early October 2000) ä All new peers are ‘participants’ ä CA*net3, STAR TAP, and Abilene have agreed on a set of BGP community “markings” to indicate ITN status: ä [AS#]:2501 = ITN participant ä [AS#]:2500 = ITN non-participant
