WRITING A C.V. // RESUME English 214

What is a C.V. (or Resume)? *C.V. stands for Curriculum Vitae summarizes your experiences and skills WHICH ARE RELEVANT to field of work you are entering (NOT a list of everything you’ve done) highlights your accomplishments to show a potential employer that you are qualified for the job is intended to get you an interview includes more than just your paid work experience (consider including important extracurricular, volunteer, and leadership experiences)

Which items are important? Heading: – Your name, address, telephone numbers, address Personal Profile: – describing your of strengths and skills. Education: – University Degree, High School, Certificates Work Experience and Internships: – in the same field of work to which you are applying Volunteer activities: -- in or out of the field of work to which you are applying IF:  you had a leadership role  you worked in a team

Other important items: Descriptions of duties:  "I maintained ten computers, loaded new software and resolved technical problems as needed.” Descriptions of accomplishments:  "I created PowerPoint presentations to train office employees on the new company software. Additional skills:  For example: other languages, and in your case you can say that you have so many years of learning English language (intermediate) and you are an A, B student… You have created, used Power Point for presentations in English, Photo Shop, and so on. Be creative, look into all the things you have accomplished well. Interests/hobbies:  What do you like to do?

A note on References: – Who would recommend you for this job? *It is best if you can provide at least two references and avoid family members and friends. Include the person’s name, title, place of work and contact information. EXAMPLE: Dr. Hanan Al-Amer, Vice Dean University of Ha’il, Ladies Branch Mobile: *References on a C.V. is optional, but if you do not include a reference or references you should write: “References available upon request”

PERSONAL SKILLS (2, 3 not more than 4 things) -Collecting information from the internet and incorporating into research. -Writing formal and informal letters, s and memos. -Studying Information System/MIS/Software Engineering/Computer Science. COMPUTER SKILLS: (at least 2) Photoshop, Access, Word, Swish Max, Power Point, Excel Very good and fast pc keyboard typing skills. INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES (at least 2-3 things) -Enjoy cooking different types of food, e.g. Mexican, Italian. -Currently reading a novel in English: Title, author, edition (Year) References upon request

Tips: Choose a Basic Font - Size 12 is a good size. Use a larger size for highlights. Bold only highlights. Include Keywords - Your resume should include the same keywords that appear in job descriptions. CV Format - Choose a chronological, a functional or a combination. Prioritize Content - List relevant/important experiences, studies first with key accomplishments listed at the top.

Format and Vocabulary Personal Profile: In your personal profile, you write 2 – 3 sentences/statements describing your skills, abilities, and positive personality traits. You need many adjectives to write this section. Here are some adjectives you can use: Personal Skills: You can describe your personal skills in your Personal Profile or highlight them seperately. Work & Volunteer Experience: After every listing of a job, volunteer activity, or other type of experience, you should details of your exact responsibilities. These should always begin with an action verb. (See worksheet in Edmodo for specific vocabulary to use!)
