Mosiah 11-17

Scripture Charades Jesus King Light Prisoner Baptism Don’t touch Fat Fire King Prisoner Fat Prophet Killed 10 Commandments

Abinadi Tell me what you know about this….

“There was a man among them whose name was Abinadi” (Mosiah 11:20) In Hebrew, ab means "father," abi means "my father," and nadi is "present with you." So the name Abinadi may mean something like "my father is present with you."

King Noah Tell me what you know about this man….

What changes did King Noah make in the government and culture of his people? (Mosiah 11:2-4,14) Vs. 2- “he did not keep the commandments of God” Vs. 3- “he laid a tax” Vs. 4- “they also became idolatrous” Vs. 14- “He placed his heart upon his riches, and he spent his time in riotous living”

Can you see any potential dangers in a man who is strong, forceful, passionate, enthusiastic, stubborn, full of himself, and overzealous?

Areas in which we can be overzealous… Politics Studies Work Exercise Sports Interpreting the directions and counsel of the living prophets.

“And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man [or a woman] should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order.” (Mosiah 4:27) “Do not run faster or labor more than you have strength and means provided to enable you to translate; but be diligent unto the end.” (D&C 10:4) If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want To Go Far, Go Together. (African Proverb)

Mosiah 11-13 Read Mosiah 12:1–8 and look for the warning Abinadi gave the people. Read Mosiah 12:9–16 looking for the reaction to Abinadi’s message.

In the strength of the Lord… Mosiah 9:17 ; 10:10-11 “In the service of the Lord, it is not where you serve but how.” Edward Dube, Look Ahead and Believe, October 2013

What was the essence of Abinadi’s message? (Mosiah 11:21-25; 12:1-8) “Except this people repent and turn unto the Lord their God, they shall be brought into bondage”

“Our challenge is to avoid bondage of any kind” “Types of bondage that are particularly pernicious in today’s culture… First, addictions that impair agency, contradict moral beliefs, and destroy good health cause bondage.  Second, some addictions can use up our precious allotment of time which could otherwise be used to accomplish virtuous objectives. These can include excessive use of social media, video and digital games, sports, recreation, and many others. Elder Quentin L. Cook, October 2013

What law did King Noah’s people feel was a burden to them? Mosiah 11-13 What law did King Noah’s people feel was a burden to them?

Which commandment is most Ten Commandments Mosiah 12:35–36 and Mosiah 13:12–24. Thou shalt have no other gods before me…. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image… Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain; Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy... Honor thy father and thy mother… Thou shalt not kill... Thou shalt not commit adultery… Thou shalt not steal… Thou shalt not bear false witness… Thou shalt not covet… Which commandment is most important to keep?

Abinadi Preaches Christ Mosiah 14 is Abinadi quoting Isaiah’s famous Messianic Prophecy. Read it, looking for a line or verse about the Savior that is particularly powerful to you.

Mosiah 14 Mosiah 14:3 What does “we hid as it were our faces from him” mean? Mosiah 14:4 According to this verse, what did Jesus suffer for in addition to our sins? “Jesus’ daily mortal experiences and His ministry included a sample of human sicknesses, grief, pains, sorrows, and infirmities which are ‘common to man’. Since not all human sorrow and pain is connected to sin, the full intensiveness of the Atonement involved bearing our pains, infirmities, and sicknesses, as well as our sins. Whatever our sufferings, we can safely cast our ‘care upon him; for he careth for [us]’ (1 Peter 5:7)” (Elder Maxwell, “Not My Will, But Thine” [1988], 51).

Mosiah 14 Mosiah 14:7 Opened not his mouth – at what point would you have blown it if you were the Savior? Mosiah 14:8 - Read Doctrine and Covenants 19:16–18

Mosiah 15 When Abinadi answers their question, he said: (Mosiah 15:13-18) According to verses 13-15, who has beautiful feet? Why were their feet beautiful—had they been at the spa? Name somebody who has beautiful feet. Beautiful Feet: “publishing peace, bringing good tidings or publishing salvation” (vs16) Will anybody ever think your feet are beautiful? (17) Who has the most beautiful feet of all? (18)

Mosiah 15-16 Read Mosiah 15:19-21. First resurrection? Aren’t there four different resurrections? Resurrections 1. Mosiah 15:22 from Adam till Christ 2. D&C 45:45 from Christ to second coming 3. D&C 101:31 those during the Millennium 4. D&C 29:22-26 at the end of the Millennium His message to us: Mosiah 16:10-13.

Mosiah 17

Mosiah 17 President Joseph Fielding Smith: “May I say for the consolation of those who mourn, and for the comfort and guidance of all of us, that no righteous man is ever taken before his time” (address at the funeral of Elder Richard L. Evans, 4 Nov. 1971, 1).

Mosiah 17 Have you ever witnessed someone stand up for what was right when it was difficult for him or her to do so? What was the outcome? How strong is your testimony? Would you be willing to die for it? More importantly, are you willing to live for it?

Mosiah 17 “Be strong—in standing for the right. We live in an age of compromise and acquiescence. In situations with which we are daily confronted, we know what is right, but under pressure from our peers and the beguiling voices of those who would persuade us, we capitulate. We compromise. We acquiesce. We give in, and we are ashamed of ourselves. … We must cultivate the strength to follow our convictions” (Gordon B. Hinckley, “Building Your Tabernacle,” Ensign, Nov. 1992, 52).
