Where does China fit on the continuum? TASK: Using the cards, create an annotated timeline of China’s rise to economic power, in relation to GDP. Key terms...FDI? WTO? Time limit

1980s – huge increase in agricultural output. Deng Xiaoping begins to increases number of exports – China is introduced into the WTO. Open cities established to encourage FDI. Large amounts of FDI led to a massive increase in GDP. Communist control over how industry is run is relaxed. The WTO has given China better access to global markets. GDP begins to grow at a rate of 10% a year. Special economic zones (SEZs) established to encourage TNCs to set up in China – China moves away from a centrally planned economy towards capitalism.
