Presentation transcript:

Kinetic Theory of Matter – all matter is made up of small particles (atoms and molecules). The hotter they are, the faster they move.

Temperature measures the average kinetic energy ( speed, kinda) of particles in something.

Heat is the transfer of energy from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object.

Types of Heat Energy Transfer

Conduction is the transfer of heat energy between particles that are in direct contact. Faster moving particles collide with slower moving particles, transferring energy.

Conductors readily transfer heat energy. Insulators slow the transfer of heat energy.

Convection is the transfer of heat by movement of the heated substance itself. Cooler fluids are more dense than warmer fluids, causing them to sink, forcing the warmer upwards.

Fluids are gases and liquids because they flow.

Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through electromagnetic waves, usually infra-red waves.
