What is blank verse? Poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter lines.
What is iambic pentameter? The pattern of stresses or beats in each line of poetry. Foot: a stressed + unstressed syllable
Iambic Pentameter Iamb: a foot with one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, as in the word “again” Pentameter: verse written in five-foot lines
What is an aside? A short speech delivered by an actor in a play, expressing the character’s thoughts. It is directed to the audience and is presumed to be inaudible to the other characters.
What is a soliloquy? A long speech expressing the thoughts of a character alone on stage. In Julius Caesar, Brutus delivers a soliloquy while he is alone in his orchard. It reveals his fears about how Caesar might change were he crowned king.
What is a monologue? A speech by one character in a play, story, or poem. May be addressed to another character or to the audience. In Act II, Brutus delivers an impassioned monologue citing reasons to assassinate Caesar.
What is a dramatic speech? Special types of speeches made in Shakespearean drama. –Aside –Soliloquy –Monologue
What is the difference between external and internal conflict? External- between two characters or groups Internal- involving a character’s struggle to decide between two opposing ideas or values.
What is parallel structure? Use of similar grammatical forms to express similar ideas. The similarity in form emphasizes the similarity in content. Speakers often uses this to make their speeches rhythmic and memorable.
Tragedy A work of literature, especially a play, that results in a catastrophe for the main character. In ancient Greek drama, the main character was always a significant person, a king or a hero, and the cause of the tragedy was a tragic flaw.
Tragic Flaw A weakness in one’s character that leads to their downfall.
