What are Learning Styles? The way an individual acquires and processes information in learning situations... (Wikipedia.org) The idea of individualized learning originated in the 1970"s. Examples may include Auditory and Visual learners.(VAK/VARK)
Why are Learning Styles important? Adapting different teaching methods for specific learning styles is alleged to provide better learning outcomes If you know your student's learning style, you will be better equipped to teach them. You will be better prepared for the choice of specific curriculum.
Examples and History of Learning Style Models David Kolb's theory Gregorc's model Fleming's VAK/VARK model
David Kolb's theory Kolb’s model use 4 modes to engage learning: 1. Converger 2. Diverger 3. Assimilator 4. Accommodator
Gregorc's model Gregorc’s model is based on the how the mind works and what makes sense to us (how we perceive the world). It is based on 4 qualities: 1. concrete sequential 2. concrete random 3. abstract sequential 4. abstract random
Fleming's VAK/VARK model Most commonly used in education today. Uses four types of learning styles 1. Visual learners(sight): watching demonstrations and videos. 2. Auditory learners(listening): listening for key works in a lecture or discussion. 3. Reading/writing preference learners. 4. Kinesthetic learners(touch): via experience moving, touching and doing.
Conclusion/ Observations In theory learning styles may work but may not work in real-world situations, however it does not mean learning styles have no value. Teaching to a variety of learning styles may make students more comfortable which may provide better results. I can provide a enriched learning experience for both the student and teacher.
