Lemon and Potato Wet Cell Batteries

Purpose: Investigate which metals and which wet cell food source makes a better battery Materials: Lemon Potato Copper Zinc Steel Multimeter Connecting wires Metric Ruler Hypothesis: When placed in a ____________ at a distance of __________ the __________ and __________ metals will make the best battery. Safety: Wear goggles and wash hands after lab.

Procedure: (8 steps) Preparation of Lemon and Potato Soften the potato and lemon to increase juice production Use 1cm, and 2 cm distances between electrodes

Data Table: Volt Readings Electrodes Lemon Potato Copper –Steel 1cm 2cm Steel –Zinc 1cm Zinc – Copper 1cm

Bar Graphs (2) StackedBar 1 graph for the lemon and 1 graph for the potato X axis C-Z, Z-S, S-C Y axis Voltage 6 bars for each graph 1 bar for1 cm and 1 for 2cm

Questions What combination of metals and distance produced the highest voltage? If you change only the distance but use the same metal strips, what is the effect on voltage? 3. Which makes a better battery? Explain why.
