 Aim: How can we improve our expository writing?  Objectives: Integrate quotations  Do Now: Review components of a body paragraph  Homework: Finish paragraphs

 TOPs (Topic Sentence) is the main idea of the paragraph (not a detail)  The TOPs is one sentence in length  It is the first sentence of a body paragraph  It is the interpretation or argument that the entire paragraph will focus on  TAG + Main Idea + SW?

 The TOPs is followed by a developing idea.  The developing idea develops the TOPs. It further expands on the idea in the TOPs  The developing idea is 2-4 sentences immediately following the TOPs.  Write out a “How” and “Why” question about your argument and answer it in 2-4 sentences.

 Example from story- The example illustrates the TOPs in 1-3 sentences.  Quotation- Quotations are taken from the text and cited properly.  They are integrated and properly cited.  Quotations provide PROOF of the argument or interpretation.  1-3 sentences

 Inference or Analysis of the Quotation- An analysis of the quote in relation to the TOPs.  It is NOT a summary, it is an analysis.  3-5 sentences

 The conclusion is the final sentence of the body paragraph.  It is NOT a recap of the paragraph.  The conclusion interconnects the main idea of the paragraph with the “so what-ness”?  The conclusion illustrates the significance and consequences of your idea.

 Topic Sentence   In Ray Bradbury’s short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains,” he illustrates how people’s dependence on technology detaches them from nature, ultimately leading to the destruction of the world around them.  Developing Idea  How does a detachment from nature lead to destruction?   Technology is a consuming, part of everyday life  Overuse of technology creates isolation/distancing  Technology takes the place of nature, and gives people basic needs (food, shelter, etc)   Modern society depends on technology for survival. Basic needs, such as food, shelter, and luxuries such as entertainment, once provided by nature, are now all attained through technological devices. Individuals no longer have be part of the real world because nature is brought to them through electronics.   Quotation   Nature is replaced and kept at a distance by the house. Even after the family is long gone, technology continues to keep nature at a distance. “If a sparrow touched the window the shade popped up… Not even a bird must touch this house” (2).   Analysis of Quotation   How does this quotation connect to the topic sentence?   With nature locked out, it is out of sight out of mind  Animals the are part of nature are replaced in the nursery  Yellow giraffes, blue lions, pink antelopes, false reality  No concern for nature, out of sight, out of mind.   Conclusion   Human-developed technology that causes humans to be unattached, isolated from nature, is what ultimately causes their downfall in the form of a nuclear Armageddon. 
