This land wasn’t always called Michigan! We used to be called the Northwest Territory!
The Toledo War! Michigan was at war with Toledo over some land. Ohio used to own the Upper Peninsula. Michigan used to own a small strip of land in Toledo, Ohio.

Underground Railroad The underground railroad wasn’t really a railroad at all. Does anyone know what it was?
The underground railroad was not a railroad. It was a secret path that led slaves to freedom.
Two Sides during the Civil War North = the Union South = Confederate
The Union Side: North During the Civil War, the union was the Northern part of the United States. They were against slavery and wanted to make it illegal. *They fought for equal rights for everyone. *They wanted to end Slavery!
The Confederate Side The confederates were the Southern part of the United States. They fought for slavery. They wanted it to continue and didn’t believe everyone should have equal rights. They wanted to break away from the USA
Michigan Michigan was very important in helping slaves escape to freedom! 1.There were many people willing to house, feed, and guide slaves to Canada. 2.There were many routes to take leading to Canada.
