Summary The proposed design project is to create a prototype of a home automation system. The system will allow users to freely walk throughout a home/area while adjusting environmental settings to match their pre-configured preferences. Ultimately, this will allow for more comfortable living. The motivation behind the idea is to enhance the living experience throughout the home and allow users to feel comfortable without having to constantly adjust the lighting, music, or worry about locking/unlocking doors. The final product will allow a user wearing an RFID transmitter to walk up to their home and have the door unlock on its own. Upon entering, the light intensity adjusts to their preferred level and a playlist of their favorite music begins playing. As they leave the room, the lights will go out, assuming no other RFID’s have entered, and their music will pause. All settings will be stored, such that they can change and manipulate them if they find a new setting that they prefer. It is still very early in the design phase and therefore difficult to give a good estimate of the prototype cost. Based on some initial research, we propose that various interfacing and circuit design elements along with packaging, will cost roughly $600-$900. Allen and Daniel will handle the software including interfacing with existing X10 protocol devices. Nathan and William will be in charge of all electrical hardware implementation and packaging design choices. Everyone will work together to determine the proper microprocessor choice to meet the software and hardware needs for the final design criteria.

Project-Specific Success Criteria 1. An ability to detect a user based on RFID as well as differentiate between multiple users. 2. An ability to adjust the light intensity or control AC devices to match a user’s settings through X10 protocol. 3. An ability to play a music playlist at a preset volume as well as pause and resume playback in another location. This would require a separate playlist for each user. 4. An ability to save a user’s settings to their specific RFID as well as quickly store a desired configuration. 5. An ability to adjust settings via PC/phone application.
