SPRING PRE-SEASON COACHES’ MEETING 2009

Agenda Item A. Athletic Policy Handbook review LEBANON ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT LEBANON ATHLETICS WILL PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION AS AN EXTENSION OF THE CLASSROOM IN A COMPETITIVE AND WHOLESOME ENVIRONMENT WITH AN EMPHASIS ON RESPECT OF OTHERS AND SELF, INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE.

COACHING EXPECTATIONS 1)PUT YOUR ATHLETES FIRST 2)BE A ROLE MODEL FOR LOYALY, HONESTY, AND INTEGRITY 3)CONSTANTLY STRIVE FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH 4)MAKE PLAYING FOR YOU A POSITIVE LIFE EXPERIENCE 5)BE ORGANIZED, EFFICIENT, AND TIMELY 6)BE A LEADER OF YOUR PROGRAM 7)BE A POSITIVE FORCE IN THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY 8)BE KNOWLEDGEABLE OF THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF YOUR SPORT 9)ENJOY THE RIDE 10)ALWAYS PUT YOURSELF IN A POSITION THAT CAN BE DEFENDED

Positive Coaching Techniques Use language that is free of curse words. Use positive instruction techniques. Verbalize to your athletes what you want them to do, not what you don’t want them to do. Make sure your practices are organized and you have your plans written out and with you at all times. Accept the performances of referees and officials and act in a positive manner at all times. Be consistent in your treatment of athletes. Consequences should always be given to individuals, not to an entire team. Keep parents informed. A positive coach is a “Double-Goal Coach” who wants to win, and has a second goal of helping student-athletes develop positive character traits so they can become successful in life.

BEFORE the start of your first practice. Make sure you have gone over all of your rules and regulations with your team. Inform your team that HAZING IS PROHIBITED and is a misdemeanor of the third degree. Walk through your practice facility to make sure it is safe. All athletes must have a physical card signed June 1st or later and also be cleared by our Certified Athletic Trainers. All athletes must give you 2 completed emergency cards and the athletic code of conduct cover page signed by them and a parent/guardian. Take precautionary measures when it comes to the spread of viruses, infections (MRSA), or diseases.

4 WAYS TO PREVENT MRSA  WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN  COVER ALL OPEN WOUNDS  DO NOT SHARE PERSONAL ITEMS LIKE: TOWELS, RAZORS, DEODORANT, WATER BOTTLES, ETC.  SHOWER AFTER PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT INDICATE A CONCUSSION MAY HAVE OCCURRED SIGNS OBSERVED BY COACHING STAFFSYMPTOMS REPORTED BY ATHLETE  Appears dazed or stunned  Headache  Is confused about assignment  Nausea  Forgets plays  Balance problems or dizziness  Is unsure of game, score, or opponent  Double vision or fuzzy vision  Moves clumsily  Sensitivity to light or noise  Answers questions slowly  Feeling sluggish  Loses consciousness  Feeling foggy or groggy  Shows behavior or personality changes  Concentration or memory problems  Can ’ t recall events prior to hit  Confusion  Can ’ t recall events after hit ACTION PLAN TO FOLLOW WHEN YOU SUSPECT A PLAYER HAS A CONCUSSION 1. REMOVE THE ATHLETE FROM PLAY. 2. ENSURE ATHLETE IS EVALUATED BY AN APPROPRIATE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. DO NOT TRY TO JUDGE THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE INJURY YOURSELF. 3. INFORM THE ATHLETE ’ S PARENTS OR GUARDIANS ABOUT THE KNOWN OR POSSIBLE CONCUSSION AND GIVE THEM THIS FACT SHEET ON CONCUSSIONS. 4. ALLOW THE ATHLETE TO RETURN TO PLAY ONLY WITH PERMISSION FROM AN APPROPRIATE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. Information provided by the Dept. of Health & Human Services Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

Show this video to all of your players before picture day.
