Connecting Teachers and Students with Science Experts: NASA’s Expedition Earth and Beyond Program P. V. Graff, W.L. Stefanov, K.J. Willis, S. Runco, T. McCollum, M. Baker, M. Mailhot, C. F. Lindgren ARES Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science

 Inquiry-based student involvement program facilitated by ARES Education at NASA JSC  Provides a structure for students in grades to conduct authentic research about Earth and/or other planetary bodies  Provides an opportunity for student teams to put in data requests for new Crew Earth Observation images of Earth  Connects students with NASA JSC/ARES and other scientists  Provides professional development for educators EXPEDITION EARTH AND BEYOND Project Overview

EEAB PROJECT COMPONENTS

EARTH SYSTEMS SCIENCE Awareness of complex interaction between systems  Program designed to incorporate an Earth System Science approach to studying Earth.  Students can consider systems that exist and play a role in other planetary bodies.  Enables participation by educators teaching a wide range of courses.

 ~500 students (~20 teams) from TX, ME, OR, CT, PA, AZ, LA, IL  Elementary (grade 5), Middle School, High School  Will participate for ~6 weeks  Will conduct research using a variety of Standards-aligned, inquiry-based (5E Model) curriculum and resources:  Spheres of Earth Activity  Blue Marble Matches Activity  Student Scientist Guidebook  EEAB Team Workspace Wiki EXPEDITION EARTH & BEYOND EXPEDITION EARTH & BEYOND Beta-Testing

Objectives:  Become familiar with the different Earth systems  Become familiar with features visible in astronaut photos associated with each system  Understand remote sensing terminology associated with studying imagery from space  Gain an interest in a feature to possibly investigate

Images available at the Gateway to Astronautt Photography of Earth Website

Objectives:  Learn about geologic processes/features on Earth.  Identify specific geologic features in astronaut photos.  Create a list of criteria to identify geologic features.  Gain an interest in a geologic feature to possibly investigate.

THE PROCESS OF SCIENCE All Science Begins with Observations that lead to a Question Request New Data

EXPEDITION EARTH & BEYOND WEBSITE

 Bringing science experts to the classroom (virtually) to help mentor students teams.  Helps add to the rigor, relevance, and motivation of student research.  Helps provide support to students and teachers. EEAB TEAM WORKSPACE WIKI

 In-person and virtual educator workshop sessions to help teachers learn techniques and strategies  Hands-on/virtual experience to model activities and build educator confidence  Workshops for in-service and pre-service educators EXPEDITION EARTH AND BEYOND Educator Workshops
