Fall of Rome 476 CE – Germanic leader Odoacer ousted Roman Emperor – the fall – 14 year old boy named Romulus Augustulus Byzantine emperors ruled for another 1000 years and fell to Ottoman Turks in 1453 – disorder and decline led to feudalism.

REASONS FOR THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Political: (a) Government inefficient & corrupt. (b) Empire to large to be governed from one central city. (c) Rivalry over successors to throne, led to civil wars.

REASONS FOR THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Economic: (a) Small farmers abandoned land led to production loss. (b) Large estates caused economic decline. (c) Heavy tax burden, often unjust. (d) Slaves caused unemployment among plebeians.

REASONS FOR THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Social: (a) Main interest luxury & survival. (Patriotism, service, & morality almost vanished.) (b) Sharp class distinction, upper class: wealthy and educated; lower class: poor and ignorant. (c) Culture & industry declined as people fled to rural areas.

REASONS FOR THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Military:(a) Warlike spirit weakened by Christian teaching of peace and universal love. (b) Germanic mercenaries with uncertain loyalty. (c) Armies often chose emperors & determined government policy.

Foreign Invasions A weakened Rome could not withstand the forces of Germanic invasions. The Huns dislodged other Germanic peoples and, little by little, conquered the Roman empire.
