ASIA AND NILE Experiment Project

Research Question Do high level hockey players or high level dancers live a more well-rounded life?

Hypothesis Hockey players live a more well-rounded life than dancers do, due to less training time on the ice versus a dancer’s training time in the studio.

Experimental Procedure Step one: Asia will ask 10 dancers and Nile will ask 10 hockey players a set list of questions. Step two: They will analyze the answers found and compare and contrast the difference between the dancers and the hockey players. - They are primarily looking to compare the time that the athletes spend training and what they do in their spare time to result in a more well-rounded life.

List of Questions -How many hours do you spend on the ice/ in the studio per week? up to How much of your own time do you spend working to improve your performance on the ice or on the stage each week? less than What do you do to train on your own time? -How much free time do you have to simply relax at home? Little to none SometimesOften All the time -How much time do you spend socializing with friends? Little to noneSometimesOftenAll the time

Data Results for Dancers Hours per week in the studio : Each dancer we asked, spends hours in the studio each week. How much time do they spend on their own: 3 dancers spend less than one hour per week, 4 of the dancers spend 1-3 hours per week and 3 dancers spend 3-5 hours per week. What they do to train on their own time: Most of the dancers simply do things at home such as stretch and do foot exercises while watching t.v., or tend to injuries while their at home by rolling out their muscles or going in the hottub or ice bath. One of the dancers balances on a balance board while brushing her teeth. Only two of the dancers do other things to train, one goes to the gym and one takes yoga class once a week. How much free time they have to simply relax at home: 5 of the dancers said that they have little to no time to relax at home because when they are home they are either eating or doing homework and 5 dancers said that they relax at home sometimes but not often. How much time do they spend socializing: 7 of the dancers said they have little to no time to socialize with people outside of their dance friends with whom they spend most of their time with. 3 dancers said they have some time to socialize but not too much.

Data Results for Hockey Players Hours per week they spend on the ice: Each hockey player said that they spend 5-10 hours on the ice per week. How much time do they spend on their own: 7 hockey players said that they spend 5-10 hours training on their own and 3 hockey players said that they spend 3-5 hours training on their own. What do they do to train on their own time: Every hockey player does something off the ice due to less ice time than needed. Most of them play road hockey and do strength training at the gym almost every day. Some of them go running most days and participate in track and field or cross country running events through the school. Others bike and ski on the weekends. How much free time they have to simply relax at home: 2 of the hockey players said he only has some time to relax at home because he focuses on his school work. 4 of the hockey plays said they relax at home often and 4 said they have time to relax at home all of the time. How much time do they spend socializing: 4 of the hockey plays said they have some time to socialize with friends and family, 3 said they socialize often and 3 said that they socialize all of the time.

Analysis/Conclusions In conclusion hockey players live a more well rounded life mostly due to less available ice time therefore they must find other things to do to train on their own. Since dancers spend the majority of their time at the studio, they don’t have the time to do other things. When hockey players find other things to do it also becomes social if they are playing road hockey or going to the gym with their friends. They also have the time to be apart of other teams such as a bike team. When dancers do things to train on their own it is more likely than not, at home by themselves.

Possible Errors in Results: Some possible errors could be: We only asked dancers who all dance at the same studio and hockey players who play on the same team therefore they all have relatively the same schedule. The hockey players and dancers could have made things up to make themselves sound better and more involved in their sport. It could vary with the time of year, maybe hockey players have a busier schedule in September while dancers have a busier schedule in January.
