Mink Pre lab Information Anatomy and Physiology

Safety Goggles and gloves must be worn at all times. DO NOT touch specimen and then touch face, eyes, etc. Report any unusual reaction (burning eyes, nausea, skin irritation to the teacher IMMEDIATELY!)

Safety continued When using the scalpel or scissors- YOU MUST CUT AWAY FROM YOURSELF AND OTHERS!! You will be shown the proper method to hold and dissect with the scalpel. All sharp utensils must be stored under the BLUE MAT.

Safety continued Appropriate behavior must be obeyed at all times during the lab. Any fooling around, walking around or mistreatment of the specimen will result in an immediate failure and removal from class. THIS IS YOUR WARNING! When pointing to a structure, you must always use a probe.

Safety conclusion When using blunt end scissors, the blunt end touches the tissue and the sharp end will cut. Dress appropriately. No open toed shoes, flip flops or sandals. Dress for the weather!

Procedure You will receive your mink on the blue dissection tray, ventral side up. Explore the external features of the mink. Use your gloved finger and find the sternum and rib cage. Notice the neck region and if any structures are exposed. Trace with your gloved finger the FIRST sagittal incision you will be making. The incision should start at the neck opening and end at the bottom of the sternum. When approved, you will proceed with your scalpel to make the first incision. When complete have your teacher check. If the internal structures are not visible, put your scalpel away and use your blunt end scissors to cut the sides and expose the thoracic cavity.

Procedure continued The pipettes can be used to remove the dissecting fluid onto a paper towel. Using your lab you will identify the: heart and auricles, right and left lungs, bronchi, trachea, esophagus, diaphragm, intercostal muscles, superior and inferior vena cava, aorta. After your progress has been assessed, you will use your blunt end scissors to continue down the incision into the abdominal cavity. You will remove the greater and lesser omentum. Using your lab you will locate: stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum. After your teacher has checked for correctness, you will remove the stomach and open the contents onto a paper towel. Notice whether the rugae are present.

Procedure continued After the removal of the abdominal organs, you will locate the kidneys. You will attempt to remove the urinary system in 1 unit. You will then dissect a kidney with a FRONTAL incision. Using your lab, you will identify the: medulla, pyramids, cortex, capsule and pelvis. Any extra information you provide, for example types of tissues visible or functions of organs will be added to your overall grade.

Procedure and Grading You will be graded on: Behavior (followed safety instructions, participated in lab, cooperation with group, cleaned up properly) Accuracy and Correctness (correct dissection techniques, proper incisions were made and accurate location of structures) This is your lab practical portion of your final exam.
