Welcome Introductions New Teacher Recognition ‘Rules of the Road’

Event # 1 Change in Program of Study Based on FLDOE directive, ‘modified’ ESE courses have been/will be eliminated. Impact: A significant number of students with disabilities must now address regular education standards.

Event # 2 Response to Intervention (RtI) Intent is that students receive tiered-levels of prescriptive, academic/behavioral support embedded in general education classrooms. Impact: Expectation that all students have access to specialized, intensive intervention/remediation as needed.

Event # 3 Change in SLD Eligibility Criteria Core component of eligibility is now documented outcome of appropriate PS/RtI implementation Impact: Significant reduction in the number of students inappropriately labeled as ‘disabled’

Event # 4 Resource Allocation - Effective Instructional Practices Comprehensive, district-wide analysis of current instructional practices and resulting ‘effectiveness.’ (ERS) Impact: “Are we getting the best bang for our buck ?”

How do the ‘Limony Snicket’ events come together to…?

Guiding Principles

Guiding Principle 1 All students, including students with disabilities, are subject to high expectations and are encouraged to achieve to the maximum degree possible.

Guiding Principle 2 A student with a recognized disability has a greater likelihood of experiencing significant academic and/or behavioral challenges.

Guiding Principle 3 The impact of a disability may require remediation, intervention, and differentiation resulting in the need for flexible timelines of instruction and access to alternative, specially designed instruction (curriculum).

Guiding Principle 4 Overwhelming and consistent data and research support the contention that more than one year of retention dramatically increases the likelihood of a student dropping out.

Guiding Principle 5 Multiple factors such as academic history, attendance, behavior, family/community support, interventions, etc., play a pivotal role in creating the unique profile of any student being considered for retention or promotion.

Service Delivery Based on unique individual student needs Flexibility to create different ways of providing instruction (one size DOESN’T fit all) Ability to group like learners (ESE & Gen Ed) Ability to create more time by prioritizing and overlapping content

Curriculum/Instruction Core Curriculum Differentiated Instruction Specially Designed Instructional Materials – 6 Minute Solution – Reading Mastery – Phonics for Reading – Flip for Comprehension – Number Worlds/Building Blocks

Curriculum/Instruction Appropriate Accommodations and Adaptations Access Points – There may be a few students who remain in a general education classroom and are instructed on Access Points. These students have unique requirements. They must have ESE support for all FOUR core subjects.

What do we all need to be successful? Training and access to core curriculum and materials Equal partnership with general education teachers Training in new Adaptation options Understanding and Mastery of Differentiated Instruction

What do we all need to be successful? Stronger connections between data collection and student needs Documentation that validates your efforts Certification to match instructional needs (General Education)
