Geography Silistra / historically Bulgarian Drastar / is a port city of northeastern Bulgaria, lying on the southern side of the lower Danube at the border of the country with Romania. History The Romans built a fortress in 29 AD on the site of an earlier Celtic settlement and kept its name, Durostorum It became an important military centre of Moesia and grew into a city. In 388, Durostorum became the seat of a Christian bishopric and a centre of Christianity in the region. After the Roman Empire was split, the town became part of the Byzantine Empire. Economics In the city is placed one of the biggest meat combine „Mekom“. The root of the local economics are farming, fabrics, furnishing, food products and brick-making. Srebarna Nature Reserve The Srebarna Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in northeastern Bulgaria (Southern Dobruja), near the village of the same name, south of the Danube. It comprises Lake Srebarna and its surroundings and is located on the Via Pontica, a bird migration route between Europe and Africa. The reserve has a rich fauna and flora. Idea The reserve has a rich animal and plant world but the human activity does not influence them well. For this reason we are investing in the creation of a biosphere reserve which will provide a better place for the species to live. This way we will increase the tourists interest in the reserve.
