Presentation transcript:

 The Mass Genocide in Darfur has shocked the world. Disputes between different ethnic groups have lead to massive blood shed and force residents to flee their homes.

 The U.N. has tried to assist Dafur but president Omar al-Bashir he refused and insisted that he could handle it.

 An estimated 2.7 million people had at that time been displaced from their homes

 Sudan has been at war with itself for almost its entire post-colonial history, starting in Nearly all of its major ethnic and religious groups have fought one another, and politics continues to be dominated by mistrust, outside interference and combustible animosities. There are dozens of armed groups across the country.

 A long awaited referendum on southern Sudan began on January 9 th 2011 which over 90% of the citizens of southern Sudan voted for. The new nation will be called the Republic of South Sudan upon independence.

Thesis: how does imperialism affect Darfur today?

 Egypt had imperialized Darfur by 1821, how ever by 1883 many successful revolts led by Muhammad Ahmad.  In response to this Egypt appointed British General Charles George Gordon as governor of southern Sudan from 1877 to  Britain joined Egypt in 1898 to defeat the Sudanese rebels at The Battle of Omdurman. Britain and Egypt decided to rule Sudan together, but Britain held the most power.  Because of this Sudan is now in civil war with each other.

 The Sudanese rebelled again in the early 1900's. Some Sudanese wanted Egypt to rule Sudan; others wanted to be independent and free from all foreign control.  Egypt tried to revolt against Britain, but that revolt was diminished quickly in 1924, Britain exiled the Egyptians living in Sudan.  Egypt and Britain came to an agreement to rule Sudan as a joined government.

 After a national movement through Egypt and Britain decided to let Sudan apart of the government.  After a vote for self government Sudan became an independent nation in January 1,  Today Sudan is having trouble controlling it self as an independent nation, they are currently in civilwar with each other, there is always reports of genocides cause of the differences in ethnicities

 African Union forces have been deployed to Patrol the Kruger national park and some 9,000 humanitarian workers are trying to help over two million displaced people.

 In 2004 the United States contributed 2 billion dollars for a humanitarian program in Sudan.  In 2004 forest service experts helped assess humanitarian needs in Darfur.

 Despite pleas from the international community, Sudan's government has refused to reconsider the decision to expel the aid organizations, which it accuses of collaborating with the ICC. The move has infuriated people in the displaced persons camps, who have no trust in the government.

The Europeans stripped Darfur of all their recourses and would sell it back in Europe

 Britain took the oil from Darfur and left the people with nothing and made them slaves to get the oil

The problem in Darfur because the need for resources

 Oil in Darfur begin the Genocide  This is a war fought by the surrogates  This is the effects for the world’s sick obsession for resources  This also called the invisible war because it is happening in africa

The people of Darfur are dying because of the war/Genocide and no one has tried to put a stop to this
