Title: Pole Side Impact Test The Safety case Name: Allan Jonas Organisation: Department of Infrastructure and Transport Economy: Australia Thirty Fourth APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting, Brisbane, Australia June 2011

TPT-WG34, Brisbane, Australia Thirty Fourth APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting, Brisbane, Australia, June 2011 Definition of Pole Side Impact Pole Side Impact: A side impact with a rigid narrow object including road signs/traffic signals, lamp posts, telegraph poles, electricity poles, trees, fire hydrants, and bridge supports/abutments. Note: The data presented here has been compiled solely for the purposes of the GRSP informal group on pole side impact. All data is subject to ongoing review, and therefore also subject to the possibility of future correction, should any issues be identified (e.g. database coding issues/limitations).

TPT-WG34, Brisbane, Australia Thirty Fourth APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting, Brisbane, Australia, June 2011 Reviewing last Year’s Presentation Focused on different pole side impact tests Different dummies in use Outlined a crahs test program to develop a single test regime that would be acceptable to all It also outlined the measures for establishing the safety need in parallel with the above activities

TPT-WG34, Brisbane, Australia Thirty Fourth APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting, Brisbane, Australia, June 2011 Overview of Data Collection Varying levels of data have been provided by USA, UK, Japan, France, Germany, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands. –Further data collection is required. Australia has collected national fatality data ( ) and more detailed fatality and serious injury data for the state of Victoria ( ).

TPT-WG34, Brisbane, Australia Thirty Fourth APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting, Brisbane, Australia, June 2011 Overview of Data Collection (contd) Difficult to get detailed time series data for all countries. In many cases, it is difficult to accurately identify pole side impacts: –May be understated due to data coding / definition issues. Different vehicle category and serious injury definitions were used in the collection of crash statistics.

TPT-WG34, Brisbane, Australia Thirty Fourth APEC Transportation Working Group Meeting, Brisbane, Australia, June 2011 Recent Updates to Data UK provided comprehensive fatality and serious injury data for pole side impacts, other side impacts, and rollovers. Canada updated data to include all pole type side impacts –data presented last meeting only included poles and not all pole like objects such as trees. Netherlands provided fatality and serious injury data for pole side impacts and other side impacts.
