FIRE FROM THE ROCK Sharon M. Draper Lindsey Elizabeth Cannella

Who? I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about racism, to know how bad life was for colored people. It was not the best, and definitely not the easiest. This book is a good example of how good we have it today.

What?? This book is about a teenage girl who is excited about moving up to high school. “But,” the Federal Law has decided to integrate Central High. She was one of the first African Americans to enter that school. According to her, she wasn’t that excited anymore, only because she had to leave her friends and everything wasn’t so normal anymore. The question is did she ever appreciate what she had, and most of all did she get used to it?? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out!!

When? This book took place in 1957.

Where?? This book was placed at Central High, and Sylvia Patterson’s Home.

Why? It was really hard for Sylvia to go to Central High because she wasn’t used to being with all of the white people. Everything was segregated before the Federal Law made the agreement to let colored and whites to go to school together. She didn’t like whites because she thought she was going to get made fun of because of her race. In my opinion, I don’t think she should be afraid because it’s always good to do something new, and different.

How? After getting settled in school, she knew that everything was going to horrible, or maybe things would change. She wasn’t exactly one of the “nine.” People always asked her how it felt not to be the famous one, but her response was “I will be famous some day. You just wait and see!” Way to go Sylvia!! After that…well, I think that’s pretty much enough for now. You can always look for this book at a public library or your school library in the fiction section. Just be sure to read the whole thing! (:
