Studies Supporting Wood Bats  Numerous studies have been conducted  Majority of them conclude wood is more safe  Includes a study done in 1977 and a study called the Crisco and Greenwood Batting Cage Study  Fairly old studies  Bats have improved since then  Show that metal is more dangerous due to speed of the batted ball  Faster speed of batted ball makes it more dangerous

Laws Made  Many places and organizations are already starting to act  New York City Council voted in 2006 to ban metal bats from high school play  Passed on a vote of 40-6  NCAA banned BESR rated bats in 2010  BESR have been used for numerous years  NCHSSA followed in 2011  BBCOR is the new standard

Number of Deaths  Since 1991 there have been 16 deaths due to metal bats  Only 2 deaths from wood in same time  Inaccurate representation of metal bats  90% of youth players use metal  Ratio of number of deaths to the number of bats used

Because I researched bat safety, I decided to host a Homerun Derby for my product

Product  Speak to Monty McLamb  Head of the Miracle League of Johnston County  Speak with Jonathan Allen  Needed to get a field at Clayton Parks and Rec.  Speak with Johnny Whitfield  Editor  Got the derby advertised in Clayton News Star

Product  Layout of the derby  Three age groups  Make flier  Take it too schools in the community  Get supplies from Clayton Little League  Pitching machine, baseballs, etc.

Product  Get a trophy for the winner of each age group  Wake up early and set up the field at the Clayton Community Park  Host each age group and crown winners  Clean up  Also volunteered multiple times with the Clayton Little League Juniors team

Mentor  Lance Rhodes  Coach for Clayton Little League  I helped coach his team  Helped me get the supplies I needed to host the derby

Challenges and Successes  Challenges  The temporary fence I needed for the younger age groups was not put up  Timing of the derby and weather  Successes  Amount of money raised  Ability to get a good field

What I Learned  The biggest thing I learned is how to host an event  The importance of advertisement
